Our Origin Story

Wendy Cummins founded Agave HR Partners in early 2020. Throughout her career, Wendy has held a passion for developing teams, for recruiting top talent, and for coaching and mentoring leaders. Wendy began her Human Resources career in corporate banking and learned the value of creating excellent people processes to attract, develop and retain top talent even during the challenges of a global economic recession . Wendy later transitioned to an HR adjacent career as an employee benefits consultant. In that role, Wendy helped small and mid-sized business navigate change during the height of healthcare reform!

While working with these small and mid-size businesses, Wendy had an opportunity to share the best practices she had learned earlier in her human resources career. The human resources functions in many of these businesses were either being managed by an HR director with insufficient support staff of their own, or by an office manager or financial controller wearing many other hats. Sometimes the HR role was being filled by the business owners themselves. Wendy saw an opportunity to take some of the burden off these employers in a way that would ultimately benefit their teams and the culture of their entire organization.

Regardless of Wendy’s official job title throughout her career, clients, colleagues, and fellow community members have turned to Wendy for advice regarding all types of HR concerns, including compliance, recruiting, change management, leadership development, risk management, and employee benefits.

When the country went into lock-down during those first weeks of the pandemic, Wendy was on speed dial for many of the business owners she had worked with over the years. Focused on helping people during that unprecedented time, Wendy saw that moment as the perfect time to start Agave HR Partners!

Why the name Agave?

Wendy wanted a name that would remind her of the desert. She finds inspiration in the beautiful flowers and plants that are able to grow and even thrive in the desert with seemingly little resources. The agave plant in particular reminds her of human resources in the way that its seemingly spiky edges distract from the healing properties that actually lie within.

Some of the strongest teams Wendy has ever been a part of also thrived in the middle of adversity, and she wanted the name of her business to reflect that resilience. We may go through periods of limited resources and even scarcity; however, scarcity can often be the very catalyst that forces us to focus with clarity on the things that really matter and will have the most impact.

Team Agave

When Wendy first envisioned her business, she knew she wanted her clients to be an extension of her team as much as she hoped they would see Agave as an extension of their own. Several of our clients routinely share best practices and difficult lessons learned and encourage us to pass them on to our other clients. We see our clients and several close professional collaborators as important team members of Agave HR Partners. Because Human Resources is an incredibly broad field, we have developed trusted relationships with other business professionals in HR-adjacent fields to provide additional support to our clients as needed.
